Ingredients

4 thick slices of brioche or challah bread

2 large eggs

1/2 cup milk (whole or almond for a dairy-free option)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1 tablespoon unsalted butter (or vegan butter)

1 large apple, peeled, cored, and diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon lemon juice

Maple syrup, for dipping

Powdered sugar, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Apple Mixture: In a medium-sized bowl, toss the diced apples with brown sugar and lemon juice. Set aside to let the flavors meld.

Make the French Toast Batter: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and granulated sugar until well combined.

Soak the Bread: Preheat a griddle or non-stick skillet over medium heat. While it heats, dip each slice of brioche or challah bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak on each side for about 15-20 seconds. Let the excess drip off.

Cook the Bread: Add the butter to the skillet. Once melted and bubbling, place the soaked bread slices in the skillet, cooking for 3-4 minutes per side or until golden brown. Repeat with remaining slices, adding more butter as needed.

Cook the Apples: In a separate pan, heat a small amount of butter over medium heat. Add the apple mixture and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and caramelized.

Assemble the Dippers: Once the French toast is cooked, cut each slice into strips or sticks. Serve warm, accompanied by the sautéed apples on the side for dipping.

Garnish and Serve: Optionally sprinkle with powdered sugar for an extra touch, and serve with a small bowl of maple syrup for dipping and drizzling.
