Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon instant yeast

1/2 cup whole milk, warmed (110°F)

1 large egg

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for lamination)

1/2 cup chocolate hazelnut spread

1/4 cup chopped hazelnuts (optional)

1 egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water for brushing)

Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. In a separate bowl, mix the warmed milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth. Form into a ball and place in a greased bowl. Cover with a clean cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Prepare for Lamination: Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a floured surface and roll it into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough. Fold the dough in thirds, like a letter, and wrap it in plastic wrap. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Create Layers: After chilling, roll the dough out again to the same size and fold in thirds. Repeat this process two more times, chilling for 30 minutes between each lamination. This will create the flaky layers.

Shape the Cruffins: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll the final dough out into a rectangle (about 1/4 inch thick). Spread a generous layer of chocolate hazelnut spread over the surface, leaving a small border. Sprinkle chopped hazelnuts over the spread if using.

Roll and Cut: Starting from one long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Slice the log into 12 equal pieces. Place the slices cut side up in muffin tins.

Second Rise: Cover the muffin tin with a cloth and let the rolled cruffins rise for about 30 minutes until puffed.

Bake the Cruffins: Brush the top of each cruffin with egg wash. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and let them cool slightly in the pan for about 5 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Enjoy: Serve warm, and savor the delightful flaky and chocolatey layers of your homemade cruffins!
