Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

1 pound Italian sausage (mild or spicy, based on preference)

1 onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce (or homemade)

1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup ricotta cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cook the Ziti: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Sausage Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes, until translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Brown the Sausage: Add the Italian sausage to the skillet, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

Combine Sauces: Stir in the marinara sauce, crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 5 minutes to let the flavors meld.

Mix the Cheeses: In a large bowl, combine the cooked ziti, the sausage and sauce mixture, ricotta cheese, and half of the mozzarella. Mix until well combined.

Assemble the Ziti: Transfer half of the ziti mixture into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle half of the remaining mozzarella and half of the Parmesan cheese over the top. Spread the remaining ziti over this layer and finish with the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Let it cool for about 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
