Ingredients

1 pre-made pie crust (9-inch)

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 ¾ cups whole milk

3 large egg yolks, lightly beaten

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Whipped cream, for serving (optional)

Chocolate shavings or curls, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Pie Crust: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). If using a pre-made pie crust, place it in a 9-inch pie dish and blind bake according to package instructions until golden. Let it cool completely.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt until well combined.

Heat Milk: Gradually add the whole milk to the dry mixture, whisking continuously to combine and remove any lumps. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and bubbles. This should take about 8-10 minutes.

Temper the Egg Yolks: In a separate bowl, add the lightly beaten egg yolks. Once the chocolate mixture is bubbling, slowly pour about 1 cup of the hot chocolate mixture into the egg yolks while whisking vigorously. This will temper the yolks to prevent them from scrambling.

Combine & Cook Further: Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining chocolate mixture. Continue to cook while stirring constantly for an additional 2-3 minutes, until thickened even more.

Add Flavor & Fill Crust: Remove the saucepan from the heat, and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour the chocolate filling into the cooled pie crust, spreading it evenly.

Chill the Pie: Cover the pie with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or until fully set. This allows the flavors to meld and the filling to firm up beautifully.

Serve: Before serving, top with a generous dollop of whipped cream and sprinkle with chocolate shavings or curls if desired. Slice and indulge in the rich, creamy goodness of Grandma’s Chocolate Pie!
