Ingredients

For the sweet potato topping:

2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and diced

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

½ cup milk (or cream for creamier texture)

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

For the turkey filling:

1 lb ground turkey

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 medium carrots, diced

1 cup frozen peas

1 cup chicken broth

1 tablespoon tomato paste

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon dried thyme

½ teaspoon dried rosemary

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

Prepare the sweet potato topping:

    - In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the diced sweet potatoes and cook until fork-tender, about 15 minutes.

      - Drain the sweet potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter, milk, cinnamon (if using), salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth and set aside.

        Cook the turkey filling:

          - In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic; sauté for about 3-4 minutes until softened.

            - Add the ground turkey, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook for about 6-8 minutes, until browned and cooked through.

              - Stir in the carrots, peas, chicken broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and rosemary. Season with salt and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

                Assemble the shepherd's pie:

                  - Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

                    - In a greased baking dish (about 9x9 inches), spread the turkey filling evenly at the bottom. Top with the sweet potato mash, spreading it evenly to cover the filling completely.

                      Bake:

                        - Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling.

                          Serve:

                            - Allow the shepherd’s pie to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your hearty and comforting meal!
