Italian Sub Squares

Ingredients
  

1 lb Italian sausage, casings removed

1 red bell pepper, diced

1 green bell pepper, diced

1 small onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup black olives, sliced

1/2 cup provolone cheese, shredded

1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

2 packages refrigerated crescent roll dough

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions
 

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

    Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the Italian sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat.

      Add Vegetables: Add the diced red bell pepper, green bell pepper, onion, and minced garlic to the skillet with the sausage. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Stir in the sliced black olives.

        Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage and vegetable mixture with provolone cheese, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Mix well to integrate all ingredients.

          Prepare Dough: On a large baking sheet, unroll one package of crescent roll dough. Press the seams together to form a solid crust, creating a rectangular shape.

            Assemble the Squares: Spread the sausage and cheese mixture evenly over the crescent dough. Unroll the second package of crescent roll dough and place it on top of the filling. Gently press down to seal.

              Add Egg Wash: Brush the top of the dough with the beaten egg to give it a beautiful golden finish.

                Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.

                  Cool & Cut: Once baked, remove from the oven and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes. Cut into squares and transfer to a serving platter.

                    Garnish & Serve: Optionally garnish with fresh basil leaves. Serve warm, and enjoy your Italian sub squares!
