Ingredients

1 medium green cabbage, thinly sliced

2 large onions, thinly sliced

3 tablespoons olive oil or butter

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional)

Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preparation: Start by slicing the cabbage and onions into thin strips. Set aside.

Heating the skillet: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat until hot.

Sautéing the onions: Add the sliced onions to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes until they start to soften and turn translucent.

Adding the cabbage: Stir in the sliced cabbage, salt, and pepper. Continue to cook for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage begins to wilt.

Caramelizing: Sprinkle the brown sugar over the cabbage and onions, stirring well to combine. Lower the heat to medium-low and cook for an additional 15-20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking, until the mixture is deeply caramelized and golden brown.

Finishing touches: If desired, drizzle in the balsamic vinegar during the last 5 minutes of cooking for added depth of flavor. Stir to combine.

Serving: Remove from heat. Garnish with fresh parsley if using, and serve warm as a delicious side dish.
