The origins of tiramisu can be traced back to the Veneto region of Italy during the 1960s. While the exact birthplace of this delightful dessert is often debated, many believe that it was invented in a small restaurant in Treviso. Traditionally, tiramisu is made with layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers (savoiardi), a rich mascarpone cheese mixture, and a dusting of cocoa powder on top.

Ingredients

1 cup mascarpone cheese

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup strong brewed espresso, cooled

1/4 cup coffee liqueur (optional)

1 cup crushed ladyfingers (about 10-12 cookies)

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for coating)

1/4 cup chocolate shavings (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Mascarpone Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the mascarpone cheese, heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Using an electric mixer, whip until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.

Add Coffee: Slowly add in the cooled espresso and coffee liqueur (if using) to the mascarpone mixture. Beat until well combined and somewhat fluffy.

Incorporate Ladyfingers: Gently fold in the crushed ladyfingers until evenly distributed throughout the mixture. Be careful not to over-mix, as you want to maintain a light and airy texture.

Chill the Mixture: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for about 1 to 2 hours, or until the mixture firms up enough to handle.

Form the Truffles: Once chilled, use a small cookie scoop or your hands to form tablespoon-sized balls from the tiramisu mixture. Roll them gently to ensure they are smooth and round.

Coat the Truffles: Spread the cocoa powder on a plate or shallow dish. Roll each truffle in the cocoa powder until fully coated. If desired, you can also roll some in chocolate shavings for a decorative touch.

Final Chill: Place the coated truffles on a parchment-lined baking sheet and refrigerate for an additional 30 minutes to allow them to set.

Serve and Enjoy: Once set, transfer the tiramisu truffles to a nice serving platter. Serve chilled, and enjoy the delightful fusion of flavors that resemble the classic tiramisu!
